Paradox has built its grand strategy games on the same engine lineage for well over a decade, and the console has come along for the ride. Learn it once and it mostly works in all of them.
Mostly. Two things change between games, and both of them produce the same symptom — you type something and nothing happens — so they are worth separating before you start.
Change one: how the console opens
In Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis IV, Hearts of Iron IV, Stellaris and Victoria 3, the console opens straight away. Press the key to the left of 1 and it is there.
Crusader Kings III does not. It needs -debug_mode added as a launch option first, and without it the key does nothing at all. This is the single most common reason a Crusader Kings III guide appears not to work: the reader is following instructions written for Crusader Kings II, where no launch option was ever needed.
If you take one thing from this article, take that: the older games open the console themselves, the newer ones want to be asked.
Change two: the add_ prefix
Compare the same three actions across two games in the same series:
| Action | Crusader Kings II | Crusader Kings III |
|---|---|---|
| Money | cash 5000 | cash 1000 |
| Piety | piety 500 | add_piety 1000 |
| Prestige | prestige 500 | add_prestige 1000 |
The bare noun became add_ plus the noun. cash survived unchanged in both, which is exactly why the split is easy to miss — the first command you try works, and the next two do not.
Victoria 3 went further and uses add_money where every other game in the list uses cash. There is no rule to memorise here beyond: check the game, not the series.
What is genuinely the same
Plenty, once you are in:
cashadds the primary currency in Crusader Kings II and III, Europa Universalis IV and Stellaris — gold, ducats and energy credits respectively.yesmenmakes the AI accept every proposal, in Crusader Kings II, Crusader Kings III and Victoria 3.observedrops you out of your own country or character and lets the game play itself, in Crusader Kings II and Stellaris. It is the most underrated command in any of these games.- Instant building has the same shape everywhere:
instantconstructionin Hearts of Iron IV,instant_buildin Stellaris,instant_constructionin Victoria 3.
Ironman: the console is not restricted, it is gone
This is the one that wastes the most time.
Ironman mode is what makes a save eligible for achievements — one save file, no reloading, no take-backs. In exchange, the console is switched off completely. Not limited. Not warning you. The key simply does nothing.
So if the console will not open in a Paradox game, check the save before you check the key. And if you are on Crusader Kings III, check both: Ironman and the missing -debug_mode produce an identical symptom.
Achievements, in every one of them
Using any console command disables achievements for that save. Crusader Kings III words it slightly differently — achievements are off the whole time debug mode is on, whether or not you type anything — but the outcome is the same.
This is a fair trade and worth stating plainly: these games let you cheat freely, and they simply will not give you a trophy for the run afterwards.
The order to do things in
- Start a game that is not Ironman.
- On Crusader Kings III, add
-debug_modeto the launch options first. - Press the key to the left of 1.
- Try
cash 1000. It works in four of the six and tells you immediately whether you are in. - For anything else, check that game's page — the
add_prefix is where the series stops agreeing with itself.
