Who we are

About TheGameExtras

An independent games reference. No publisher owns us, and no press trip pays for coverage.

Why this site exists

Search for a cheat code and you land on a page that was scraped in 2011, has no platform listed, and half the codes stopped working three patches ago. Search for a game's price and you get a US dollar figure that means nothing if you live in Karachi, Lagos or São Paulo. Search for system requirements and you get a wall of ads around a table someone copy-pasted without checking.

TheGameExtras exists to do those three specific jobs properly. Everything else on the site — the catalogue, the screenshots, the release dates — is table stakes that lets us be the place you come back to.

What we actually produce ourselves

  • Cheat codes we have tested. Every code is entered on the platform it is listed under, in the current retail build, and the stated effect is confirmed. Each one carries the date it was last checked. Codes that break after a patch get removed, not left up with a shrug.
  • Real local pricing. We pull the actual storefront price from twenty regions — in rupees, naira, lira, real, peso — rather than converting a US price. Regional pricing differences are frequently larger than any sale, and almost nobody publishes them.
  • Parsed PC requirements. Store listings publish requirements as unstructured prose. We parse them into comparable fields so a checker can actually tell you whether your machine clears the bar, instead of making you eyeball two paragraphs.
  • Written guides. Long-form guides are written after playing the game. If we have not played it, we do not publish a guide about it.

What we import rather than write

Release dates, cover art, screenshots, genre tags, developer credits, character lists and critic scores come from open databases — IGDB, RAWG, Steam and Wikipedia — under their respective terms. We credit all of it on the data sources page. Imported data is refreshed daily and stamped with the date it was last synced.

We are explicit about this split because it matters. A page that is nothing but imported catalogue data is not a page worth reading, and we would rather tell you which parts are ours than pretend a scraped summary was hand-written.

How we make money

Two ways, both boring. Some store links pay a commission when someone buys through them, and we run display advertising. Neither influences what we cover or how price tables are ordered — the comparison is always sorted by real price, and the cheapest store wins whether or not it pays us anything.

We do not take payment for reviews, do not publish sponsored posts dressed as editorial, and do not accept money to add or remove a game from a list.

Corrections

We get things wrong. When we do, the fix is made on the page with a note about what changed, rather than a silent edit. If you have spotted something — a dead cheat code, a wrong price, a date that shifted — tell us and we will check it.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is TheGameExtras affiliated with any game publisher?
No. We are independent. Store links may earn us a commission, which never affects what we write or how price tables are ordered.
Where does your game data come from?
Catalogue data comes from IGDB, RAWG, Steam and Wikipedia. Prices come from CheapShark, IsThereAnyDeal and Steam regional storefronts. Cheat codes are our own testing. Full attribution is on our data sources page.
How do I report something wrong?
Use the contact form. Corrections are made publicly rather than quietly deleted.
