How we work

Editorial Policy

How we test cheats, source data, correct mistakes and handle money.

This page describes how content on TheGameExtras is produced, checked and corrected. It exists because a games site that will not say how it works is usually one you should not trust.

How a cheat code gets published

  1. The code enters the queue — from our own testing, a reader submission, or a publisher's own patch notes.
  2. It is entered on the platform it is listed under, in the current retail build of the game.
  3. The stated effect is confirmed. If the code does something different from what was claimed, the description is rewritten to match reality.
  4. Side effects are checked: does it disable achievements, block trophies, break a save, or fail in a specific game mode? Anything found is flagged on the code.
  5. It is published with the platform, the exact input sequence, and the date it was tested.

Codes that stop working after a patch are removed, not left up with a caveat. If you find a dead one, tell us — that is the single most useful message we get.

Where our data comes from

Catalogue data — release dates, cover art, screenshots, genres, developer credits, character lists — is imported from open databases and refreshed daily. Prices come from retail APIs. All of it is credited on the data sources page and stamped with the date it was last synced.

We separate imported facts from our own work deliberately. A page carrying nothing but a scraped summary is not worth reading, and we would rather label it than dress it up.

What we do not do

  • We do not publish AI-written guides. If nobody here has played the game, we do not write a guide about it.
  • We do not accept payment for reviews, coverage, or placement in a ranked list.
  • We do not publish sponsored content styled to look like editorial.
  • We do not link to trainers, hacks or downloadable cheat software.
  • We do not republish another site's cheat listings.

Money

Some store links pay us a commission and we run display advertising. Neither affects what we cover. Price comparison tables are sorted by real price — the cheapest store wins the top row whether or not it pays us anything. Where a page contains affiliate links, it says so on the page.

Corrections

Mistakes are fixed on the page, with a note about what changed and when. We do not quietly edit and pretend the error never happened. Substantial corrections to a guide also update its "last updated" date, so you can tell fresh work from stale.

Authors

Every article carries a named author with a profile page listing everything else they have written. Nothing here is published anonymously.

Independence

We are not owned by, funded by, or affiliated with any publisher, developer or platform holder. We do not attend paid press trips. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed here first.
