What Tyranny is
Tyranny is an adventure game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and released in 2016. It was published by Paradox Interactive. It is available on Linux, Mac and PC (Microsoft Windows). It runs on Unity.
The premise, in the publisher's words
You are a Fatebinder, the judge and executioner of Kyros’ law, acting under the watchful eye of the Overlords Archon of Justice, Tunon the Adjudicator. Your words shape the lives of thousands. Will you use that power to bring justice and inspire loyalty? Or will you bring fear and cruelty to the beaten people of the Tiers?
How it plays
It is played from a bird view / isometric perspective. Its themes are action, fantasy and open world. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component. There are 70 achievements to unlock.
How it was received
Tyranny holds a critic score of 81 out of 100. That places it above 73% of the 7,525 rated adventure games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2016 averaged 68, so it scored 13 points above the year average. Player ratings track closely with critics at 82, across 133 votes.
How long it takes, and what that costs
The main story runs about 35 hrs. Completing everything takes closer to 60.5 hrs, roughly 1.7 times the length of the critical path.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for Intel Core 2 Quad Q9505 @ 2.80 GHz / AMD Athlon II X4 840 @ 3.10 GHz, 6 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5770 or NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 with 1GB VRAM. An 6GB memory requirement is modest by current standards; most machines sold in the last five years clear it. Install size is roughly 15GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
Tyranny launched on 10 November 2016, within three weeks of Dishonored 2, Battlefield 1, Final Fantasy XV and Titanfall 2. All of them reviewed better.
