Synesthesia is an adventure game developed by Spire Games and released in 2023. It was published by Ratalaika Games. It is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, Mac and PC (Microsoft Windows). It runs on Ren'Py.
The premise, in the publisher's words
The year is 2029. Around the world are those awakening to new powers of the mind, estimated to be about 0.016% of the next generation. The Huntley Scientific Research Institute has opened its doors to these young people to take on as students, to research their gifts and aid them in harnessing their strange abilities. Ziek is a college level student at the institute. His ability is a unique form of synesthesia, whereby he can detect the significance of objects by splashes of colour that appear in his vision. He seeks to continue his easy and comfortable life alongside his friends, but soon discovers they may be caught up in something much larger than they realise.
How it plays
It is played from a text perspective. Its themes are mystery, romance and science fiction. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component.
What it launched against
Synesthesia launched on 20 June 2023, within three weeks of Diablo IV, Final Fantasy XVI, System Shock and Dave the Diver. It arrived 3 years into the PlayStation 5's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
