The premise, in the publisher's words
Stellaris is a 4X grand strategy video game developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. Players take control of an interstellar civilization on the galactic stage and are tasked with exploring, colonising, and managing their region of the galaxy, encountering other civilizations that they can then engage in diplomacy, trade, or warfare with. A large part of the game involves dealing with both scripted and emergent events, through which the player might gain useful bonuses and profits, or vice versa, lose their power and strengthen rival civilizations. It was released worldwide for Windows, macOS, and Linux on May 9, 2016, and for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One…
How it plays
It is played from a bird view / isometric perspective. Its themes are 4x (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate) and science fiction. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component. Available modes: Multiplayer and Single player.
How it was received
Stellaris: Leviathans holds a critic score of 80 out of 100. That places it above 63% of the 612 rated real time strategy (rts) games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2016 averaged 68, so it scored 12 points above the year average.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for Intel® iCore™ i3-530 or AMD® FX-6350, 4 GB RAM and Nvidia® GeForce™ GTX 460 or AMD® ATI Radeon™ HD 5870 (1GB VRAM), or AMD® Radeon™ RX Vega 11 or Intel® HD Graphics 4600. At 4GB of RAM, it will run on essentially any working PC — that is below what a budget laptop ships with today. Install size is roughly 10GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
Stellaris: Leviathans launched on 20 October 2016, within three weeks of Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. It reviewed better than 1 of the 4. It arrived 3 years into the PlayStation 4's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
Released around the same time: Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
