The premise, in the publisher's words

SpaceEngine is a 3D astronomy program and game engine developed by Russian astronomer and programmer Vladimir Romanyuk. Users can travel through space in any direction or speed, and forwards or backwards in time. It uses pseudo-random numbers to procedurally create any kind of planetary system, nebula or galaxy.
Description from the publisher · source

How it plays

It is played from a virtual reality perspective. Its themes are educational, open world and science fiction. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component.

What you need to run it

The minimum specification calls for Intel Core i3-3220T or AMD FX-4100, 6 GB RAM and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon RX 460 (4 GB). An 6GB memory requirement is modest by current standards; most machines sold in the last five years clear it. Install size is roughly 4GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
