The premise, in the publisher's words

A music-themed, Japanese-style role-playing game released on 1991, for the NEC PC Engine CD. Its title draws inspiration from Mozart's famous opera The Magic Flute. Despite the somewhat unusual choice of protagonists, Mateki Densetsu Astralius is quite an "old-school" Japanese-style RPG. The player controls the nameless flutist and other musicians who later join the party, exploring the top-down world, visiting towns, descending into dungeons, progressing the story in a linear fashion, and fighting randomly appearing enemies in turn-based combat viewed from first-person perspective.
