The premise, in the publisher's words
Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach. As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. If Garrett doesn’t get involved, the streets will run red with blood and the City will tear itself apart.

What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for High-Performance Dual Core CPU or Quad Core CPU, 4 GB RAM and AMD Radeon 4800 series / Nvidia GTS 250. At 4GB of RAM, it will run on essentially any working PC — that is below what a budget laptop ships with today. Install size is roughly 20GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
Thief launched on 25 February 2014, within three weeks of South Park: The Stick of Truth, Dark Souls II, Hearthstone and The Last of Us: Left Behind. All of them reviewed better. It arrived 1 year into the PlayStation 4's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
Released around the same time: South Park: The Stick of Truth, Dark Souls II, Hearthstone, The Last of Us: Left Behind.
