The premise, in the publisher's words
The Departure is a two-dimensional colonist simulator in which the player is tasked with the survival of their colony. In order to sustain the colony, the player must gather resources found in the wild. With these resources, the player can build homes, mines, and campfires which generate resources.

It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component.

The Departure launched on 29 January 2018, within three weeks of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Monster Hunter: World, Celeste and Shadow of the Colossus.
