The premise, in the publisher's words

A hundred years after the end of the world, an alien athletics commission found Earth's feral wildlife and its stubborn survivors, declared the whole planet an Invitational, and started broadcasting. You're at the qualifier. Every match airs on the Galactic Athletics Commission feed, ad breaks and all. The animals are real, the natural history is real, and the hundred years of consequences are the joke. The goose is unchanged. The war changed nothing whatsoever about the goose.
