The story centers on a mysterious, sentient cave that has witnessed the whole of human history and now speaks with a wry, knowing voice. Deep within its labyrinth of tunnels, the cave draws in visitors who each believe they can learn something about themselves and who they might become. Seven very different characters, pulled from across time and space, arrive at its entrance, and each one carries a dark secret and a hidden desire that lured them here. Among them are figures like a knight, a scientist, a hillbilly, an adventurer, and a pair of twins, and the deeper regions of the cave open onto places tied to their private ambitions, such as a castle or a laboratory.
