What Terraria is
Terraria is an adventure game developed by Re-Logic and released in 2011. It was published by 505 Games. It is available on Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Android, Google Stadia, iOS, Linux, Mac, PC (Microsoft Windows) and Windows Phone. It runs on FNA.
The premise, in the publisher's words
You find yourself in a mysterious, untamed world with only a handful of basic tools and no clear path ahead. As night approaches and strange creatures begin to roam the land, you must create a place of safety and venture into the unknown. What begins as a simple struggle for survival soon becomes a journey across forgotten caverns, distant landscapes, and a world filled with secrets waiting to be discovered.
How it plays
It is played from a side view perspective. Its themes are action, fantasy, horror and open world. It supports multiplayer for up to 8 players online. Local play supports 4 players. Available modes: Co-operative, Multiplayer and Single player. There are 137 achievements to unlock.
How it was received
Terraria holds a critic score of 81 out of 100. That places it above 73% of the 7,525 rated adventure games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2011 averaged 68, so it scored 13 points above the year average. Player ratings track closely with critics at 82, across 1,076 votes.
How long it takes, and what that costs
The main story runs about 67.5 hrs. Completing everything takes closer to 770 hrs, roughly 11.4 times the length of the critical path.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for 2.0 Ghz, 2.5GB of RAM and 128mb Video Memory, capable of Shader Model 2.0+. At 3GB of RAM, it will run on essentially any working PC — that is below what a budget laptop ships with today. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
Terraria launched on 16 May 2011, within three weeks of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, L.A. Noire, Dirt 3 and Outland. All of them reviewed better. It was a PlayStation 4 launch-window title.
Released around the same time: The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, L.A. Noire, Dirt 3, Outland.
