What Rare Replay is
Rare Replay is an adventure game developed by Rare and released in 2015. It was published by Microsoft Studios. It is available on Xbox One only.
The premise, in the publisher's words
Rare Replay is a 2015 compilation of 30 video games from the 30-year history of developers Rare and its predecessor, Ultimate Play the Game. The emulated games span multiple genres and consoles—from the ZX Spectrum in 1983 to the Xbox 360 in 2008—and retain the features and errors of their original releases with minimal edits. The compilation adds cheats to make the older games easier and a Snapshots mode of specific challenges culled from parts of the games. Player progress is rewarded with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews about Rare's major and unreleased games.
How it plays
It is played from a bird view / isometric perspective. Its themes are action, comedy and science fiction. It supports multiplayer for up to 32 players online. Local play supports 4 players. Available modes: Co-operative, Multiplayer and Single player.
How it was received
Rare Replay holds a critic score of 87 out of 100. That places it above 88% of the 7,525 rated adventure games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2015 averaged 69, so it scored 18 points above the year average.
What it launched against
Rare Replay launched on 4 August 2015, within three weeks of God of War III Remastered, Until Dawn, Dishonored Definitive Edition and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. It reviewed better than all of them. It arrived 2 years into the Xbox One's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
Released around the same time: God of War III Remastered, Until Dawn, Dishonored Definitive Edition, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.
