The premise, in the publisher's words
On a weekend trip to the fictional Edwards Island, teenager Alex arrives for a beach party with her new stepbrother Jonas and her friend Ren. Once there, they meet two other teens and learn about the island's history as a former military site. While exploring the caves, the group hears that certain radio frequencies are rumored to trigger strange events, and when Alex tunes her radio to an unusual signal, she unexpectedly opens a rift and unleashes a paranormal force. As the night takes an increasingly eerie turn, Alex and her friends must work out what they have awakened and how to set things right.

What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for Intel i3 2.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM and 1GB Shader Model 3.0 Compatible (DirectX 9.0c). At 2GB of RAM, it will run on essentially any working PC — that is below what a budget laptop ships with today. Install size is roughly 3GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
Oxenfree launched on 14 January 2016, within three weeks of The Witness, XCOM 2, Yakuza Kiwami and Darkest Dungeon. All of them reviewed better. It arrived 3 years into the PlayStation 4's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
Released around the same time: The Witness, XCOM 2, Yakuza Kiwami, Darkest Dungeon.
