Mystery Tapes has the player awakening in a darkened room with 640 VCR tapes with three televisions. It is up to the player to take one or more of these tapes and put them into the TV, after which they will then discover that each tape has a unique effect on the environment.

It is played from a first person perspective. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component.
