What Humankind is
Humankind is a simulator game developed by Amplitude Studios and released in 2021. It was published by Sega. It is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, Mac and PC (Microsoft Windows). It runs on Unity.
The premise, in the publisher's words
Combine up to 60 historical cultures as you lead your people from the Ancient to the Modern Age. From humble origins as a Neolithic tribe, transition to the Ancient Era as the Babylonians, become the Classical era Mayans, the Medieval Umayyads, the Early Modern era British, and so on. Each culture will add its own special gameplay layer, leading to near-endless outcomes. Face historical events, take impactful moral decisions, and make scientific breakthroughs. Discover the natural wonders of the world or build the most remarkable creations of humankind. Each game element is historically authentic. Combine them to build your own vision of the world. The journey matters more than destination…
How it plays
It is played from a bird view / isometric perspective. Its themes are 4x (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate), action and historical. It supports multiplayer for up to 8 players online. Available modes: Multiplayer and Single player. There are 99 achievements to unlock.
How it was received

How long it takes, and what that costs
The main story runs about 46 hrs. Completing everything takes closer to 217 hrs, roughly 4.7 times the length of the critical path. At its current cheapest price of $12.49, that works out to about $0.27 per hour of the main story, or $0.06 per hour if you finish everything.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for Intel i5 4th generation / AMD FX-8300, 8 GB RAM and NVIDIA GTX 770 / AMD R9 290. An 8GB memory requirement is modest by current standards; most machines sold in the last five years clear it. Install size is roughly 25GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it costs, and where
The cheapest verified price right now is $12.49 at Steam, 75% below its usual price.
What it launched against
Humankind launched on 17 August 2021, within three weeks of Psychonauts 2, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, Twelve Minutes and The Forgotten City. All of them reviewed better. It arrived 1 year into the PlayStation 5's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
Released around the same time: Psychonauts 2, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, Twelve Minutes, The Forgotten City.
