What Grow Up is
Grow Up is an adventure game developed by Ubisoft Reflections and released in 2016. It was published by Atari. It is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Microsoft Windows). It runs on Unity.
The premise, in the publisher's words
The little climbing robot B.U.D. returns in a new adventure across a vast, whimsical open planet. When his motherly spaceship M.O.M. crash-lands and scatters her parts all over the world and its moon, B.U.D. sets out to recover every piece and put her back together. Scaling towering plants, scanning strange floraforms with unusual powers, and gaining new abilities like a jetpack and gliding, the plucky robot explores the planet from its lowest valleys all the way up into space.
How it plays
It is played from a third person perspective. Its themes are action, open world and science fiction. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component. There are 18 achievements to unlock.
How it was received
Grow Up holds a critic score of 69 out of 100. That places it above 32% of the 7,525 rated adventure games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2016 averaged 68, so it scored about average for its year.
How long it takes, and what that costs
The main story runs about 3 hrs. Completing everything takes closer to 4.8 hrs, roughly 1.6 times the length of the critical path. At its current cheapest price of $1.99, that works out to about $0.66 per hour of the main story, or $0.41 per hour if you finish everything.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for Intel i3 550 @ 3.2 GHz or AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2 GHz, 4 GB RAM and nVidia GeForce 460GTv2 or AMD Radeon HD5770(1024MB VRAM). At 4GB of RAM, it will run on essentially any working PC — that is below what a budget laptop ships with today. Install size is roughly 1GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it costs, and where
The cheapest verified price right now is $1.99 at Steam, 80% below its usual price.
What it launched against
Grow Up launched on 16 August 2016, within three weeks of No Man's Sky, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt - Complete Edition, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition. All of them reviewed better. It arrived 3 years into the PlayStation 4's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
Released around the same time: No Man's Sky, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt - Complete Edition, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition.
