What Forspoken is
Forspoken is an adventure game developed by Luminous Productions and released in 2023. It was published by Square Enix. It is available on PlayStation 5 and PC (Microsoft Windows). It runs on Luminous Studio.
The premise, in the publisher's words
Forspoken follows the journey of Frey, a young New Yorker transported to the beautiful and cruel land of Athia. In search of a way home, Frey must use her newfound magical abilities to traverse sprawling landscapes and battle monstrous creatures.
How it plays
It is played from a third person perspective. Its themes are action, fantasy and open world. It is a single-player game with no multiplayer component. There are 53 achievements to unlock.
How it was received
Forspoken holds a critic score of 67 out of 100. That places it above 29% of the 7,525 rated adventure games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2023 averaged 76, so it scored 9 points below the year average.
How long it takes, and what that costs
The main story runs about 48 hrs. Completing everything takes closer to 70 hrs, roughly 1.5 times the length of the critical path.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for AMD Ryzen™ 5 1600 (3.7GHz or better) / Intel® Core™ i7-3770 (3.7GHz or better), 16 GB RAM and AMD Radeon™ RX 5500 XT 8GB / NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 6 GB VRAM. A 16GB memory requirement is demanding — worth checking before you buy, because 8GB is still common in older and budget machines. It also needs around 150GB of free storage, which is a real consideration on a 512GB drive. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
Forspoken launched on 24 January 2023, within three weeks of Hogwarts Legacy, Dead Space, Metroid Prime Remastered and Hi-Fi Rush. All of them reviewed better. It arrived 3 years into the PlayStation 5's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.
Released around the same time: Hogwarts Legacy, Dead Space, Metroid Prime Remastered, Hi-Fi Rush.
