In the dystopian country of Ashford, Chance struggles to survive as a trashpicker. His father sold him into factory slavery after his mother died, and he escaped by fleeing to the contaminated wastelands where the factory sentinels won't follow. When Aetherium (the sky nation above Ashford built above the polluted ground for the wealthy) puts out a reward on Ashford men, the sentinels hunt him down in the wastelands. He wakes up in an Aetherium hospital. They want to see if he's one of the few people able to bond with a dragon so he can join the military as a dragon rider.
