The premise, in the publisher's words
DayZ is a multiplayer online survival video game developed and published by Bohemia Interactive. It is the standalone game based on the mod of the same name for Arma 2. Following a five-year-long early access period for Windows, the game was officially released in December 2018, and was released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2019.
How it plays
It is played from a first person perspective. Its themes are action, drama, horror and open world. Available modes: Battle Royale, Co-operative, Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) and Multiplayer. There are 13 achievements to unlock.
How it was received
DayZ holds a critic score of 69 out of 100. That places it above 32% of the 7,525 rated adventure games in our database, which average 72. Games released in 2018 averaged 69, so it scored about average for its year. Players rate it 60, 9 points lower than critics did — a gap worth knowing about before you buy.
What you need to run it
The minimum specification calls for Intel Core i5-4430 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-Core, 8 GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 or AMD R9 270X. An 8GB memory requirement is modest by current standards; most machines sold in the last five years clear it. Install size is roughly 25GB. Both tiers are compared side by side on the requirements page, and you can check your own parts against them without installing anything.
What it launched against
DayZ launched on 13 December 2018, within three weeks of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Gris, Dusk and Ashen. All of them reviewed better. It was a PlayStation 5 launch-window title.
Released around the same time: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Gris, Dusk, Ashen.
