What Abzu is

Abzu is an adventure game developed by Giant Squid and released in 2016. It was published by 505 Games. It is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Microsoft Windows). It runs on Unreal Engine 4.

The premise, in the publisher's words

A lone diver awakens at the surface of a vast ocean and begins descending through its waters, moving between open sea, natural caverns, and submerged ruins. Ancient murals reveal that a long-vanished civilization once lived in balance with this ocean. Guided by a great white shark, the diver reaches wells that restore life to the seas, while robotic devices harvest the ocean's energy and threaten the fragile balance that remains. The story is told wordlessly, drawing on themes from ancient mythology.

What it launched against

Abzu launched on 2 August 2016, within three weeks of No Man's Sky, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Overcooked! and Starbound. It reviewed better than 1 of the 4. It arrived 3 years into the PlayStation 4's life, so it was built for hardware developers already knew well.

Released around the same time: No Man's Sky, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Overcooked!, Starbound.
