Pixel Art Editor

Draw sprites, animate them frame by frame and export a GIF or a sprite sheet — right here, with nothing to install and nothing uploaded.

A free pixel art editor that runs in your browser: draw sprites frame by frame, preview the animation and export a PNG sprite sheet or an animated GIF. It is Piskel, the open-source editor, hosted on this site — no account and no upload. It needs a desktop or laptop browser; Piskel does not support phones.

Verified

Piskel needs a desktop or laptop screen. You can open it anyway, but it will not work well on a phone.

About 900 KB, loaded only when you press the button.

Prefer more room? Open the editor in its own tab.

What you can do with it

  • Draw with pen, mirror, line, shapes, bucket fill and a colour picker.
  • Animate frame by frame, with layers, onion skinning and a live preview at any speed.
  • Export an animated GIF, a PNG sprite sheet for a game engine, or single frames.
  • Keep working later by saving the .piskel file to your computer.

About Piskel

Piskel is an open-source editor by Julian Descottes and contributors, released under the Apache License 2.0. We host an unmodified build of it so it loads fast and never sends your drawings anywhere; the project itself is at github.com/piskelapp/piskel. It is not made by or affiliated with TheGameExtras.

Quick answers

About the pixel art editor

Is my drawing saved?
Piskel keeps your work in this browser's local storage and can also save a .piskel file to your computer. Nothing is sent to our server, so clearing your browser data removes anything you did not save as a file.
Can I use it on a phone?
No. Piskel is built for a mouse or a drawing tablet on a desktop browser, and its own project does not support mobile devices.
What can I export?
An animated GIF, a PNG sprite sheet, individual frames, or the .piskel project file to keep editing later.
