How to Use a PS5 DualSense Controller on PC

The PS5 DualSense controller works well on PC. Connect it with a USB-C cable or pair it over Bluetooth (hold PS + Create until the light bar pulses, then choose Wireless Controller), enable PlayStation Controller Support in Steam Input, use DS4Windows for non-Steam games, and update the firmware with Sony's PC updater app.

The DualSense is one of the best-feeling controllers ever made, and you do not need a PlayStation 5 to enjoy it. On PC it works over a wired USB-C connection and over Bluetooth, with broad support in Steam and workable support everywhere else — as long as you set it up correctly.

This guide walks through every connection method, Steam Input configuration, DS4Windows for games outside Steam, firmware updates on PC, and what to do when the controller drops its connection.

Connect the DualSense with a USB-C cable

The simplest method is a wired connection. Plug the controller into your PC with a USB-C cable — use a proper data cable, not a charge-only one — and Windows 10 or 11 will detect it within seconds as Wireless Controller in your Bluetooth & devices list. No drivers or extra software are required for basic input.

Wired is also the best option for compatibility: advanced features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers only work over USB on PC (see below), and you never have to think about battery life or Bluetooth interference.

pairing a ps5 dualsense controller to a pc over bluetooth

Pair the DualSense over Bluetooth

For wireless play, the DualSense pairs like any other Bluetooth device:

  1. Make sure the controller is off — hold the PS button for about 10 seconds until the light bar goes dark.
  2. Hold the PS and Create buttons together until the light bar starts pulsing blue. The Create button is the small button to the upper-left of the touchpad.
  3. On your PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth and select Wireless Controller from the list.

If you have previously paired the controller with a PS5, pairing it with your PC will break that pairing — the DualSense remembers only one Bluetooth host at a time. Pressing the PS button afterwards may also wake your PS5, so power the console down fully (not rest mode) before you start.

configuring steam input for the dualsense controller on pc

Set up Steam Input for the DualSense

Steam has native DualSense support through Steam Input, and this is the configuration most PC players should use:

  1. In Steam, open Settings > Controller and set PlayStation Controller Support to Enabled.
  2. Connect your DualSense, then check a game's settings: open the game's page in your library, click the controller icon on the right, and confirm Steam Input is enabled for that title.
  3. Use the controller configuration screen to remap buttons, tune stick dead zones, and set up gyro aiming where the game supports it.

With Steam Input enabled, the DualSense works in virtually every Steam game, including older titles that only understand Xbox controllers — Steam translates the inputs automatically. If a game shows Xbox button prompts, that is normal: the game is seeing a virtual Xbox controller.

Use DS4Windows for non-Steam games

Steam Input only helps inside Steam. For games from the Epic Games Store, GOG, Xbox Game Pass, or emulators, use DS4Windows — a free, open-source tool that makes Windows treat the DualSense as an Xbox 360 controller, which almost every PC game understands.

  1. Download the latest DS4Windows release from its official GitHub page and install the included ViGEmBus driver when prompted.
  2. Connect your DualSense (wired or Bluetooth), launch DS4Windows, and confirm the controller appears in the Controllers tab.
  3. Create a profile to remap buttons, adjust stick curves, or disable the touchpad — then leave DS4Windows running while you play.

Close Steam before using DS4Windows, or disable PlayStation Controller Support: if both Steam Input and DS4Windows grab the controller at once, you will get double inputs in games.

Update the DualSense firmware on PC

Sony ships firmware updates that fix connectivity bugs and improve battery behaviour, and you do not need a PS5 to install them. Download the official Firmware updater for DualSense wireless controller app from PlayStation's website, install it on Windows 10 or 11, then run it with the controller connected over USB-C.

Follow the on-screen prompts and do not disconnect the controller until the update finishes. If you own a PS5, connecting the controller to the console updates it automatically too — but the PC updater exists precisely so PC-only players are not left behind.

Haptics and adaptive triggers on PC: what actually works

Here is the honest answer: the DualSense's headline features are barely supported on PC. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers need games built with Sony's DualSense PC support, and only a small number of Steam titles implement it — typically over a wired USB connection. Over Bluetooth these features do not work at all.

For the vast majority of PC games, the DualSense behaves like a very good standard controller: precise sticks, a great D-pad, and basic rumble through Steam Input or DS4Windows. Buy it for the ergonomics and build quality, not for PC haptics.

Battery life and disconnection troubleshooting

Expect roughly 6–12 hours per charge depending on how hard the haptics, adaptive triggers and speaker work — turn those down and the battery lasts noticeably longer. For connection problems:

  • Random disconnects over Bluetooth. Move closer to the PC, use a Bluetooth 4.0 or newer adapter or dongle, and keep the controller away from USB 3.0 ports and Wi-Fi routers that cause interference.
  • Controller keeps waking the PS5. Fully power off the console — or unplug it — while playing on PC.
  • Windows drops the controller when idle. In Device Manager, find your Bluetooth adapter, open Properties > Power Management, and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  • Inputs stop working mid-game. Close DS4Windows if Steam Input is also active (or vice versa), then reconnect the controller.
  • Controller will not pair at all. Reset it with a pin in the small hole on the back, then pair again from scratch.

FAQ

Does the DualSense work on Windows 10? Yes — wired and Bluetooth connections both work on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Can I use the DualSense with the Epic Games Store? Yes, via DS4Windows. Steam Input does not reach games launched outside Steam, but DS4Windows makes the controller look like an Xbox 360 controller to any game.

Do I need a Bluetooth adapter? Most modern laptops and motherboards have Bluetooth built in. If yours does not, a cheap USB Bluetooth 5.0 dongle works fine.

Why does my PC call it “Wireless Controller”? That is the DualSense's Bluetooth device name — it is how the controller identifies itself to Windows, and it is completely normal.
